Wednesday 19th March – skiing **** sunny
We were up really early and managed to get up to the chair lift for our
day’s skiing at St. Pierre de Chartreuse by 9.30 which is a bit of a
record for us! We were hoping that by setting out so early we would get
the best of the snow before it starts to go soft in the sun as it is
another sunny and warm day:) Unfortunately it was still really hard and
icy but it wasn’t too bad and we had great fun on the rather tricky and
steep slopes. It certainly isn’t a resort for learners! We saw several
come to grief with ski’s popping off and flying off down the piste by
themselves! There was a nice blue path leading to a great red on our side
and a really lovely red over the other side. A lot of the pistes are
closed as the snow has gone and there are no liaisons with the small
section called Le Planolet so we weren’t able to go over there but on the
positive side the lift pass was only 16 euros instead of 23! And there is
nobody here! Our favourite piste was a red off the top of the only drag
lift which was in good condition nearly all day and only started to go off
late in the afternoon. We went back to the van at 11ish to have a cuppa
and some biscuits sitting on our new chairs:) We packed our lunch and went
up to La Scia which is a viewpoint actually marked on our map right at the
top of the resort. There is a really pretty yellow restaurant up there but
we walked above that and sat on the dry grass above the paraglider take off
(nobody about today though:() We stayed there for ages eating and reading
in the sunshine. We enjoyed our day and got back to the van about 4.30 so
got the most from our cheap day lift passes! Decided to drive off to find
somewhere different to stay tonight but it proved a bit tricky. We went on
a tour over to the west through some beautiful gorges (Gorges du Guiers
Mort), calling at a Monastery (which has been good for an overnight stop
before) but it wasn’t the kind of place you could park so we carried on
to St. Laurent du Pont at the bottom of the gorge and made our way over to
the Gorges du Guiers Vif which completes the square to take us back to
where we started. We tried a nordique ski place La Ruchere which was up a
very long and winding road but no good. We turned left and went back the
way we came yesterday until we found Entremont Le Vieux - Le Desert station
which is a tiny debutant alpine and nordique ski village but it looks like
the alpine slopes are finished. Parked in the car park with great views
over the Granier.
